The Group Data Science Lab is a team that uses predictive analytics, machine learning, big data, and operations research skills to support key projects for the Discovery Group and individual Discovery business units. They work across various areas, including health, life, and short-term insurance businesses. The lab uses state-of-the-art tools and works with terabytes of structured and unstructured data within a big data environment.
The position requires a data scientist to work on cutting-edge Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Model (LLM) projects. Responsibilities include working with large quantities of unstructured text data, reviewing academic literature, working with senior data scientists and data engineers, prototyping code for data science and ML systems, evaluating prototypes, models, and deployments, and presenting analyses and project updates to both technical and business audiences.
Personal attributes include a creative attitude to learning, enthusiasm for building systems that solve real problems through data and technology, ability to balance multiple priorities, and alignment with Discovery values and core purpose. Technical skills include SQL, Python, problem statement formulation, and communication. Advantageous qualifications include version control (Git), experience with R, NLP packages and models, TensorFlow and PyTorch, LLMs, Spark, and Dask.
Education and experience requirements include an Honours or Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Operations Research, Industrial engineering, Applied Mathematics, or similar quantitative field. A PhD degree is advantageous, but other qualifications may also be considered. Candidates at all levels of experience are considered.
