Transnet Freight Rail is offering a structured two-year Young Professional-in-Training (YPT) programme designed to provide unemployed South African graduates with exposure to the freight rail environment. The programme aims to develop technical and professional competencies through institutional learning, mentorship, and practical on-the-job experience. The selected candidate will gain in-depth exposure to environmental management, sustainability practices, and compliance processes within the freight logistics sector, preparing them for long-term employability and professional growth in South Africa’s transport and infrastructure industry

Responsibilities

• Participate in a structured two-year graduate development programme focusing on environmental management, operational efficiency, and sustainability practices
• Assist in implementing and monitoring Transnet’s Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in compliance with legislative requirements and internal standards
• Conduct environmental audits, impact assessments, and risk evaluations under supervision
• Support the development and review of environmental policies, procedures, and reports
• Collect and analyse environmental data to identify trends and recommend improvement measures
• Contribute to waste management, energy efficiency, and pollution control initiatives across operational sites
• Liaise with internal stakeholders, government departments, and environmental agencies to ensure compliance with applicable laws and best practices
• Participate in project-related environmental planning and provide input on sustainability measures
• Prepare and present progress reports as part of the YPT performance assessments every six months

Qualifications

• Required Qualifications:
• BSc in Natural Sciences (Earth & Environmental)
• BSc in Environmental Science
• Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management
• BTech in Environmental Science
